Gantry cranes are quite effective and safe when it comes to handle heavy objects indoors and outdoors. Depending on the type of structure and application, gantry cranes can be divided into different types. Here you can take a closer look at several common types of gantry cranes you will come across.
Different Types of Gantry Cranes
Full gantry crane is the most common type. The metal structure is like a gantry frame. Two legs are installed under the main beam, which can travel directly on the ground track. The main beam can have overhanging cantilever beams at both ends to effectively utilize the site area.
Semi gantry crane is a combination of overhead crane and gantry crane. One leg of the semi gantry crane runs along a rail on the ground surface, while the other runs along elevated runway beam. There are height difference between the two legs depending on the site requirements.
Portable gantry crane
Portable gantry crane provides greater flexibility as it can be transported and assembled in different locations as needed. However, this crane is small and can only handle small loads.
Single girder gantry crane
This crane consists of one girder beam, usually with the trolley and hoist underhung the bridge girder. Single girder gantry crane is suitable for light duty to moderate service.
Double girder gantry crane
Double girder gantry crane consists of two girder beams, usually recommended for heavier-duty applications. The capacity of the crane ranges from 5 tons to more than 450 tons.
Common Applications of Gantry Cranes
Gantry cranes comes in various types depending on their uses. They can be used for various industrial applications.
Gantry cranes can be used in all kinds of manufacturing plants to handle various goods and bulk materials. Automobile, steel plants, etc. are the most common industries using gantry cranes. Depending on your application, you can use single girder, double girder, semi-gantry, and portable gantry system.
Depending on the size and weight of the load, different types of gantry cranes can be used in the warehouse, from small capacity single girder gantry crane to large double girder gantry crane.
Shipyard gantry crane is commonly used for assembling the hull of the ship. This crane is often equipped with two lifting trolleys: one has two main hooks and runs on the rail of the upper flange of the bridge; the other has a main hook and a secondary hook, and runs on the rail of the lower flange of the bridge so as to flip and hoist large hull sections.
The gantry crane of the hydropower station is mainly used for lifting and opening and closing the gate, and can also be used for installation operations.
Container gantry cranes are used in container terminals to lift and move large containers. This crane can accelerate the turnover of container carriers or other cranes, and improve the utilization of the container yards. Container gantry cranes are available in rail mounted and rubber tyred type.
Gantry cranes are designed to handle various types and sizes of loads. No matter what your project is, understanding different types of gantry cranes and their applications will help you find the crane that best suits your needs.
